As a native of Litchfield County and a licensed broker for 36 years, I would be delighted to find the perfect country house for you and to introduce you to the pleasures of country living. I know where to find the antiques, the horses, the trout, the skeet, the walking trails, the galleries, the best movies, the concerts, and the bagpipes.

My expertise is historic architecture, which has led me to serve on boards of preservation organizations, including the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden in Bethlehem, and I have toured many historic houses both here and abroad. I welcome the opportunity to find the perfect place for you right here in Litchfield County, where fine architecture abounds—both old and new.

Remarks:

Built c1760 by the legendary Jabez Bacon, Connecticut's first millionaire merchant, the house is just off Main Street among a tapestry of museums and other historic houses. A preservationist's dream, the Bacon house has been lovingly and carefully restored by owners who were stewards of Connecticut history. The owner for the last 55 years was a key figure of preservation efforts in the state and a founder of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. It is truly a house for the connoisseur.

The Bacon house is a superb example of the Georgian style with a gambrel roof and exquisite pedimented front door. The extraordinary interior architectural detail is a tribute to the highest level of 18th Century craftsmanship. The paneling in each of the Formal Rooms and Bedrooms is of a different design. Original English Delft tiles grace three of the seven fireplaces. The elegant Dining Room and Parlor, each with a fireplace and paneled walls, inspire large gatherings. At the rear of the house is a cozy, informal Family Room/Library - originally the Keeping Room. It has the largest of the fireplaces complete with 2 beehive ovens. Bookcases line the walls and a door at the end of the room opens to a small stone patio. The Kitchen with a bay window overlooks the rear lawn. On the second and third floors are 4 generously proportioned Bedrooms and 3 Baths.

A charming 1-Bedroom apartment with a separate entrance is attached to the house. It includes a fireplace and Breezeway.

Following the same architectural lines as the main house, an adjacent Summer Kitchen has historic significance. It is believed to predate the residence and is a rare example of a surviving New England free-standing Summer Kitchen. This marvelous building has a massive fireplace with hand-wrought cooking crane and beehive oven. Upstairs a loft area includes an unusually large smoke chamber complete with the original hooks for smoking meat. A private screened porch with stone floor links the Summer Kitchen to the landscape. Nearby an early 2-story barn with unique details serves as garage and workshop space.

Lovely lawns with old shade trees and flowering shrubs radiate out to the side and rear of the house. The Jabez Bacon House is within walking distance of all the village amenities and has a front view of preserved open space. A path along the Pomperaug River is within strolling distance of the house.

The Bacon House is in the Woodbury Historic District. In addition, there is a Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation easement on the façade. Part of the property is in open space and other preservation easements will be in place prior to closing.

Woodbury, a major New England antiques center, is ideally located for travel to major cities and Litchfield County cultural activities while offering the delights of small town living.

Remarks:

An exceptionally beautiful pastoral setting is the background for an iconic mid-century modern residence. Well-protected by its own 18± acres, the four bedroom, two and a half bath house was designed by noted architect Tom Babbitt. He sited the house masterfully on the land and incorporated the true style points of mid-century modern architecture:

• harmony with the site
• natural building materials carried from the inside to the outside
• windows carefully placed to draw the eye outdoors
• deep overhang for natural cooling
• built-in cabinetry
• openness in the core of the house

The property is pure Connecticut – serene meadows (complete with a neighboring farmer's cows), split rail fencing, stonewalls, undulating topography, woods with a variety of trees and some wetlands. With considerable road frontage, the property lends itself to possible sub-division. In addition, there is a potential tax advantage for a buyer wishing to place conservation easements on the land.

The interior has an open, informal layout with the master bedroom suite at one end and three bedrooms at the other. Most of the house has cathedral ceilings, except for the three family/guest rooms. The living room has a wall of glass looking out on magnificent, mature tree trunks close to the house – and lovely landscaping beyond. Built-in cabinets and drawers are cleverly concealed throughout the house.

A Scott pool, large deck and manageable perennial gardens complete the setting.

The house is located under two miles from Main Street and about ten minutes from I-84. Woodbury offers all the conveniences while maintaining a lovely small-town character. Fine dining, galleries and outdoor activities abound in the area.
